You earn points for performing various tasks around the site. For example, you receive points for uploading media, commenting, referring new members, posting a blog and various other actions. Basically you will earn points by being active around the site just like you normally would. The more active you are, the more points you will earn!

Also, your points may go down. This can happen if you delete a media file, blog, comment, etc. Since those items no longer exist you will not get points for them. Points are for the life of your account and are re-calculated on each login. The goal is to encourage more site activity and interaction among members to help foster a true community.
